Lessons Learned - Vice Wing Commander

Last semester I had the amazing opportunity to serve as the Vice Wing Commander (#2 cadet in charge of the Air Force Academy). I learned a lot of lessons and I’d like to share a few of them so that others can benefit from the experience. 1) Leadership is Leadership - this is something the Command Sergeant Major (top enlisted adviser) of Joint Special Operations Command (SEAL Team 6, Delta Force and 24th STS) told me when he was visiting. The leadership principles you learn through sports, extracurriculars, business, etc can be applied in any area of your life. I’ll tell anyone that I’ve learned more about leadership on the rugby pitch than anywhere else. Apply those lessons. 2) Focus on the Mission - at the Academy, our mission is to develop the next generation of combat leaders. It’s easy to forget that and focus on the “2-meter targets” that will pop up on a daily basis. Figure out what your mission is and what you need to do in order to accomplish that.
